Meet the Beckers

From Our Family To Yours

Perhaps we've already had the pleasure of meeting you at the farmers' market or while out and about in the community! If we haven't had that opportunity yet, we hope we will soon!
We, Kyle and Emily Becker, established Becker Farms in 2007 in northeast Henry County as an avenue to provide customers with high-quality, safe freezer beef. Over time, we have expanded our farm to include chickens, turkeys, pigs, and hens.

Kyle is the true visionary of the farm, as he was raised on a dairy, beef, and grain farm in Wayne County and loves few things more than being outside working with crops and animals.  He has a B.S. in Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Purdue University. In addition to our farm, he works as a food animal veterinarian for Heritage Vet Partners where he travels to other dairy and beef farms throughout Indiana and Ohio.

I (Emily) grew up in Kokomo, where the closest to agriculture I came was attending the county fair, mostly for the lemon shake-ups. I have learned a lot about this important, ever-changing field and lifestyle. My journey began upon enrolling in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University where I earned a B.S. in Food Science. Initially, my entire life goal was to help develop new ice cream flavors! While still an ice cream-lover, I became interested in food safety and went on to finish a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Indiana University. I worked off-farm for about 5 years as a health educator... but then our family began to grow. I've been blessed to be at home since 2012 raising and homeschooling our daughters, Charlotte and Stella, and our sons, Griffin, Wyatt, and Everett.  As a busy mom, I very much understand what it's like having a mountain of laundry to fold at any given time, multiple schedules to coordinate, (mostly) good-for-you-meals to make, and a home that is organized (do we ever actually find what we are looking for?). This doesn't even count time for us to go on a walk, or maybe even a nap!
Oh yeah - I forgot to mention that we originally purchased our farm in 2007.  It had been planted in row-crops for several decades and the health of the soil was dreadful. Thanks to Kyle’s hard-work and determination, we are slowly, but surely, making improvements that will allow us to leave the farm to our children (if they so desire) andin a much-better state than when we found it.

It is our belief that healthy soil produces healthy pasture which produces healthy livestock (which is in line with Michael Pollan’s ‘You are what you eat eats’ thinking). On that note, it was Pollan’s 2006 book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, that inspired some of our approaches to farming.

During the summer, we attend the Carmel Farmers' Market and the Fishers Farmers' Market.  For the winter season, we attend the Carmel Winter Farmers' Market.  Additionally, we are on Market Wagon year-round. While we do not have a store-front on the farm (as frequently asked), it is one of the many projects on our “wish list”.

We truly love connecting with our customers and welcome your questions and feedback.
